Vice President of the Lighthouse Foundation Board, Jennifer Smith, kicked off the Lighthouse’s Spring Campaign activities with a unique and fun event on June 18th on Capitol Hill in Seattle.

In an effort to provide a deeper understanding of the resources available for people who are blind, as well as their own lived experiences, Smith and fellow board member Rachel Grossman-Kahn hosted a screening at the historic Northwest Film Forum. Before the show, attendees mingled in the lobby and got to participate in a raffle, with proceeds going towards the Lighthouse’s Spring Campaign for their Orientation & Mobility program.

After a few opening words from Grossman-Kahn, attendees heard about all the great work being done at the Lighthouse from former President & CEO George Abbott.

The screening was of a classic – the 1987 Rob Reiner comedy The Princess Bride, and included audio descriptions played for the attendees. Audio description is narration that provides description of visual elements, including actions, characters, settings, on screen text and more, so that people who are blind or have low vision are able to watch and enjoy films. Many streaming services provide this service for their catalogues, including Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+ and more.

You can still support the Lighthouse’s Spring Campaign – visit the Campaign Page to learn more, and join fellow Lighthouse supporters and community members on Thursday, August 7th at our Annual Summer Garden Party from 4:30-7:30pm.
