My typical workday at The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. as Development Assistant begins when I arrive in the morning. The first thing I do is check my emails for tour requests. There are a lot of requests for tours from the public wanting to see our facility and see firsthand how we make jobs accessible for blind and Deaf-Blind individuals. My job is to schedule in-house employees to be available for tours and set it all up on our internal calendar. I also assist with leading the tours. The second part of my job is to keep track of our database, ensuring that all information we receive from the community is processed correctly, and I do this with the help of my scanner that is on my desk. My scanner reads me all printed information into a word document for me to listen to through my speech software called JAWS (Job Access with Speech). I am very fortunate to have this assistive technology because without it I wouldn’t be able to do my job successfully. I also help with donor cultivation by sending thank you letters to individuals who have donated to the Lighthouse, and all other clerical duties as needed.
My goals for the future at the Lighthouse are to spend many successful years learning, growing, and to help fulfill our wonderful mission (to create and enhance opportunities for independence and self-sufficiency for people who are blind, deaf-blind, and blind with other disabilities) in every way possible.
