April 10th is National Siblings Day, and we had the privilege of speaking with Ramon Rodriguez, a contract administrator at The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. Ramon, who has been with the organization since 2016, sheds light on his journey, challenges, and the technological advancements that have empowered him and his siblings who share the genetic condition known as achromatopsia.
Achromatopsia and Genetic Connection
Ramon opens up about his legally blind status due to achromatopsia, a genetic condition affecting his ability to see colors. This condition is shared with his brothers, making them the only ones in the family with this unique trait. While it’s a stable condition, Ramon notes subtle changes in his vision as he ages.
Navigating the Unknown in El Salvador
Originally from El Salvador, the Rodriguez siblings faced challenges growing up, as there was limited awareness and support for their condition. They only discovered sunglasses and large print materials when they moved to the United States, marking a turning point in their ability to cope with everyday tasks.
Assistive Technology
Ramon emphasizes the transformative impact of technology on his life. At work, he uses ZoomText to enlarge his computer screen. And he uses a Desktop CCTV which provides a stable, ergonomic, and customizable way to stay efficient and productive at work. The portable CCTVs along with his iPhone, both play a crucial role in enhancing his ability to read, write, and perform daily tasks independently allowing him the freedom to read street signs, identify colors, use public transportation and much more all on his own.
Lighthouse Contributions
Ramon shares his experience since joining The Lighthouse, expressing gratitude for the organization’s low vision specialist who introduced him to new assistive tools. The desktop CCTV, with its ability to save reading positions and adjust color contrasts, stands out as a recent addition that has enhanced his daily tasks.
Overcoming Misconceptions
Ramon addresses common misconceptions about visual disabilities, emphasizing that not all conditions have visible cues. He shares personal encounters where seeking directions became challenging due to the lack of visual indicators. However, he highlights the power of technology and adaptive resources, emphasizing that individuals with visual impairments can achieve anything.
Joining The Lighthouse
Ramon’s journey to the Lighthouse was influenced by his brother, who joined first. Seeking closeness to family, Ramon later followed suit, finding a supportive community that recognizes him for who he is rather than just a sibling.
Beyond Vision: Hobbies and Passions
Ramon, an avid movie enthusiast, used to run a movie review channel on YouTube. Additionally, he enjoys hiking and has recently embarked on a health kick. These hobbies reflect his diverse interests and commitment to living a fulfilling life beyond the constraints of his visual impairment.
