The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. traveled back in time to the post-Edwardian era for a cup of afternoon tea. Lady Barbara Ross and Lady Billie Klan hosted an elegant High Tea event in the spirit of BBC’s Downton Abbey at the Sorrento Hotel in Seattle on Saturday, January 30th. Tea service took place in the remarkable Fireside Room featuring mahogany paneling, a gorgeous fireplace, and a center column that gave a unique touch to the room.
Barbra Ross, Foundation Board President of The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. was the emcee for the afternoon providing Downton Abbey and Lighthouse trivia, and announcing winners of the exclusive silent auction packages. The very talented Judy Thiel dazzled guests throughout the event with live music on the room’s beautiful baby grand piano. We had 45 elegant and aristocratic guests attend who were dressed to the nines. Many wore hats, long skirts and necklaces, traditional tuxes and bow ties, and other items from the iconic post-Edwardian Era.
White linen tea service at the Sorrento Hotel was a delightful experience. Guests were seated throughout the room in oversized comfortable chairs and couches. At the tables an array of assorted sweets, fresh baked pasties, and canapés were served along with fine teas from around the world.
The afternoon included a Downton Abbey-inspired silent auction including 18 different packages donated by Barbara Ross, Billie Klan, Kris Trulin, and Vi Trulin. All packages were a huge hit with the guests; there were even a few friendly bidding wars towards the end.
The most popular packages for the auction included a handcrafted set of planters handmade by Ron Ross, tea cup and saucer sets with accompanying tea accessories, and an English Manor Downton Abbey Quilt stitched by Barbara Ross.
Thanks to everyone who attended our first High Tea event benefitting The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. Overall we raised an incredible $10,000 to support our programs and services! Cheers to all who contributed. See you for tea in 2017.
