How the LyftUp Program is Filling Public Transportation Gap

In uncertain times, vulnerable communities can become even more isolated. For people who are blind, DeafBlind, or blind with other disabilities, navigating a world plagued with coronavirus can be challenging, costly, and dangerous. As public transportation and ride sharing is limited, and becomes a public safety risk, a simple commute becomes an anxiety inducing and risky event.

Lyft, in partnership with The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. stepped up to support our community, by providing access to ride credits for our employees to feel supported, healthy, and independent.

Lyft’s support during this transition has been transformative in easing the burden of finding and piloting limited accessible public transportation, allowing people to learn new routes, transition to alternative forms of transportation, and access much needed services.

May, an employee in Summerville, SC put it best, “I feel safer traveling this way because of the pandemic. I am very thankful for y’all being concerned about my welfare.”

Lyft’s LyftUp program, its initiative which aims to expand transportation to those who need it most, has provided affordable and reliable transportation for people at all of our manufacturing locations. From the Lighthouse community, we extend a sincere thank you to Lyft for supporting jobs, independence, and empowerment!
