Lighthouse Government Relations staff Mark Landreneau and Paula Hoffman attended the City’s Annual Human Service Awards at City Hall on Tuesday evening. Awards in different categories were presented by City Council members Bruce Harrell, Tim Burgess, Richard Conlin, and King Council Member Larry Gossett. We were happy to see the Washington Talking Book and Braille Library be awarded the 2012 Mayoral Award for Empowering Individuals with Disabilities by Mayor McGinn. Danielle Miller and library patron Quincy Daniels (Lighthouse employee) accepted the award. The event was also a recognition of 25 years of advocacy for human services, by the Seattle Human Services Coalition. Speaker of the House Frank Chopp shared stories of the early years of establishing human services as a core value of this city, and remarked on the growth from an original $500,000 in the city budget to the present 52 million dollar budget. Throughout these difficult economic times, the City Council and the Mayor have been strong in their commitment to human services.
