October 23rd, the Lighthouse proudly welcomed donors, friends, community partners, and colleagues for an open-house event that highlighted the incredible progress and impact of this essential program. Guests toured our Low Vision Clinic & Store, met our dedicated staff, and previewed our brand-new second exam room, opening soon.
A Premier Low Vision Resource in Puget Sound
The Low Vision Services Program is one of the Lighthouse’s premier offerings—operating as a secondary care clinic and one of the only clinics in the Puget Sound region dedicated specifically to low vision. When a primary optometrist has reached the limits of traditional care, patients may be referred to us for specialized evaluation, device recommendations, and personalized strategies to maximize remaining vision.
Our goal is simple: help every client mitigate the effects of vision loss and increase functional independence.
What to Expect During a Low Vision Exam
A low vision exam is a comprehensive functional vision assessment performed by a low vision optometrist. Unlike a standard eye exam, this in-depth appointment may last up to 90 minutes and includes:
- Review of medical and vision history
- Evaluation of daily activities and functional needs
- Low vision refraction and visual acuity testing
- Mapping of central and/or peripheral vision
- Lighting assessment
- Trialing of optical and non-optical devices
This thorough approach helps the client—and their care team—better understand how their eye condition impacts daily life.
After the assessment, clients meet with an occupational therapist who helps refine rehabilitation goals and provides hands-on guidance to support independence.
Clinic Rehabilitation Services
Our Low Vision Rehabilitation Services are provided by a licensed occupational therapist who works closely with our interdisciplinary team. This collaborative approach ensures clients receive customized support tailored to their goals.
Occupational therapy may include:
- Training to maximize use of remaining vision
- Instruction in adaptive devices and assistive technology
- Modifying tasks to accommodate reduced vision
- Recommending environmental changes to improve safety and independence
Low vision occupational therapy typically involves 2–4 sessions, beginning after the initial functional vision assessment. Each therapy plan is individualized based on the client’s needs and goals.
