Inland Northwest Advisory Council
I have been fortunate enough to be on the Inland Northwest Lighthouse (INL) Advisory Council for over six years. I recently joined the Foundation Board in early 2020. It has been a great honor to work with this incredible team and organization. The opportunity to serve The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. has been very rewarding. The work to increase awareness around blind and DeafBlind members of our community is so important.
It is amazing to see the level of engagement from the community, businesses and people that contribute to this organization regularly! It has been especially wonderful to get to know the people that work at the Lighthouse. Many of them face a number of challenges. They show up daily with grace, humility, work ethic, and a sense of purpose that is very inspiring.
Working with the Lighthouse has also given me the opportunity to teach my kids an important lesson. While we have challenges in life, we must persevere and support others that need that extra support.
Volunteering with the Lighthouse
I am so grateful to the Lighthouse. I’ve learned so much about the various types of blindness. I’ve also learned proper etiquette on how to assist someone who is blind, and the challenges faced by the blindness and DeafBlind communities. The unemployment statistics for this group are unacceptable.
The Lighthouse has made a place of employment that creates quality products for a variety of industries and our military. They’ve also created a culture of possibility and opportunity. The organization provides resources to develop life skills and create access to technology that employees wouldn’t have otherwise.
We can do more to empower this group and make our community more accessible for the blind and DeafBlind communities. Are you interested in using your passion to advocate for the independence and empowerment of people who are blind and DeafBlind? Join one of our boards!
