Dylan Job has been working at The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. since 2014 through the Supported Employment Program. Dylan commits to a long commute from Snohomish County to the Lighthouse’s Seattle, WA facility.
During his years working at the Lighthouse, Dylan has succeeded in learning many different types of jobs. He currently works in canteen assembly. He really enjoys the process of making the canteens and recognizing his important contribution to the completed pieces.
Navigating Life With Low Vision
Dylan has experienced low vision since birth. He has successfully navigated his life to be as independent as possible. He takes pride in learning how to utilize tools like his phone, iPad, and Alexa to access information. Dylan also utilizes a specialized daily calendar system designed by the Lighthouse’s Supported Employment Program (SEP) team. This tool empowers Dylan in knowing what to expect throughout his workday and minimize surprise events.
The Impacts of COVID-19
Aside from working his hardest and having the fulfilling purpose of employment, Dylan enjoys time with his co-workers and learning new skills from them. COVID has been a hard journey for Dylan; he thrives on routine, holding onto the activities he loves most. Supported Employment Program staff have been working alongside Dylan to make sure his life during and after the pandemic is just as successful as before by providing more emotional and cognitive support, and weekly virtual meetings over Zoom before his work week begins.
The Supported Employment Program
Dylan is an important participant of the Supported Employment Program at the Seattle Lighthouse. The program empowers Dylan and others to be their authentic selves during their career journey. Dylan has been given the opportunities to grow in his job, meet new friends, gain more job skills, and learn how to be a self-advocate.
When Dylan is not enjoying work, he spends his time with his family and three dogs. He describes himself as “kind, loving, and enjoys meeting new people”. Dylan loves to travel to the beaches in Oregon and to visit family in Arizona, where he enjoys the sunshine and warmth. In his free time, he builds impressive structures using LEGO bricks and keeps up with his favorite sports team, The Seattle Mariners.
Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month
March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. Over an estimated 5 million Americans experience a developmental disability (DD). DD can refer to individuals who experience an impairment in learning and behavior, such as: Autism Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, and Down Syndrome.
The Supported Employment Program at the Lighthouse provides job support and training to adults who are blind or DeafBlind and also have a developmental or intellectual disability.
