Darryl Roberts is a dedicated front office assistant at The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. where he has been a vital part of the team for over 12 years. His journey at the Lighthouse began with a contract position for Seattle Public Utilities, where he played a crucial role in digitizing archival materials. His innovative approach to file naming and organization ensured seamless integration into the utility’s system, aiding infrastructure assessments after natural disasters. After completing the project, Darryl transitioned to a permanent role in the Lighthouse front office, where he continues to make an impact today.
In his current role, Darryl provides essential administrative support, assisting with communications, appointment scheduling for the low vision clinic, HR filing, and the brailling of timecards for employees in Seattle and Spokane. His ability to adapt and problem-solve has made him a cornerstone of the Lighthouse’s operations, where he helps both employees and clients navigate services for the blind community.
Born legally blind, Darryl faced unique challenges throughout his education and career. His vision impairment, caused by permanently open irises that damaged his optic nerve, required him to seek alternative learning methods. It wasn’t until fifth grade that he gained access to large print books and braille lessons, which helped him develop the tools necessary to succeed academically. Despite struggling with braille, Darryl adapted and excelled, later attending college and pursuing a career in media and communications.
Before joining the Lighthouse, Darryl had an extensive career in television production. While in high school, he developed a passion for broadcasting and was offered an internship at a local TV station. This opportunity led to a position as a film editor, where he was responsible for modifying feature films for broadcast. His ability to adapt to new technologies allowed him to transition from film editing to digital production, securing an engineering role and eventually contributing to the development of a commercial editing studio. Over his 20-year career, he won multiple Emmy and Clio awards for his contributions to news and commercial production.
When his declining vision made it difficult to continue in television, Darryl sought new opportunities and relocated to Seattle. There, he became involved in advocacy for the blind community, serving as president of the United Blind of Seattle, a chapter of the Washington Council for the Blind. This leadership role allowed him to connect with many individuals who would later become colleagues at the Lighthouse.
Darryl’s impact at the Lighthouse extends beyond his front office responsibilities. He has taken initiatives to improve workplace efficiency, such as developing a method for brailling time cards that reduced the process from three people to one. His leadership and problem-solving skills have also been instrumental in implementing organizational changes, helping employees navigate new systems with confidence. He also serves as a user representative for the Business Management System audit process, ensuring compliance with national manufacturing standards and internal policies.
Committed to lifelong learning, Darryl has pursued training in American Sign Language to better communicate with DeafBlind colleagues.
Outside of work, Darryl continues to be the President of United Blind of Seattle, where he volunteers to tidy up people’s apartments and homes, volunteers for food drives, and helps the blind community any way he can. Taught by his grandma Mary, Darryl loves cooking. He never perfected baking cakes – his cakes were more like biscuits – but he has perfected smothered pork chops and mashed potatoes!
Darryl Roberts embodies resilience, adaptability, and dedication. Darryl’s ability to navigate challenges and create innovative solutions underscores his remarkable career and enduring impact on the Lighthouse community.
