Gary was born and raised on a small North Dakota farm and went on to graduate with a B.S. in civil engineering from North Dakota State University. He practiced six years in highways and 32 years in facilities and environmental engineering with the Department of Defense. After he retired in 2003, Gary spent ten years with the Spokane County United Way on a part time temporary basis.
