Rachel Grossman-Kahn
Rachel Grossman-Kahn is a passionate Seattle disability advocate. She works at Best Buy as an Accessibility UX Designer, ensuring that their website and app are accessible for all users, especially those with disabilities. Prior to working in tech, she was a sign language interpreter for ten years, specializing in DeafBlind interpreting. She holds a Master of Science degree in UX Design, a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts, and an Associate’s degree in ASL Interpreting. Rachel loves living near Green Lake with her husband Ben, son Bodhi, and elderly dachshund named Loomp after Picasso’s dachshund.
Rachel was a freelance interpreter with the Lighthouse for several years and was an active volunteer at the Seabeck Annual retreats, DeafBlind Community classes, and more. Over the past few years, she continued to stay connected to the Lighthouse through events, recruiting additional volunteers as needed. She feels this is a good time in her life to get more involved.
Rachel became passionate about working with people with disabilities first through her Deaf and DeafBlind friendships. Then about six years ago she herself became disabled, which fueled her interest and made her even more invested in doing all she could to promote opportunities for people with disabilities and independence. She dreamt of joining the Lighthouse’s board of directors and is eager to begin!
Rachel wants to spread the word about all the great work the Lighthouse is doing! From her discussions with current Lighthouse representatives, her personal and professional familiarity with the DeafBlind program and community – she’s excited to bring a new perspective to the board. Rachel is enthusiastic and ready to jump in as needed, sharing the Lighthouse with new potential donors.
