I am delighted to be one of the first to join the Braille Ramblers here at Inland Northwest Lighthouse (INL). It’s given me a chance to brush up on my braille reading, and discuss the article of the moment. The group is a wonderful way to reinforce braille skills, and to be able to tap in to the other members’ knowledge of braille for help. If an article contains a contraction that I have forgotten, it is great to get assistance from fellow classmates!
INL, located in Spokane, started the Braille Ramblers reading group at the beginning of February this year. At present we have seven members and meet every other Friday from 11.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. We take turns researching an article for the group to read by our next meeting. At the meetings we eat our lunch and person who supplied the article acts as facilitator for that meeting. They explain why they chose that particular article and we then have a discussion about the article and if we found any braille contractions that stumped us.
We enjoy our time together as we are all brushing up on our braille skills and enjoy the various articles we have read. We hope more of our co-workers will join the Ramblers after having braille instruction here at INL.
