Ethel L. Dupar’s Fragrant Garden is located at our Seattle facility, and is designed specifically for people who are blind or DeafBlind, with over sixty different fragrant plants that appeal both to the sense of smell and touch.
Established in 1973, the garden is completely wheelchair accessible. A nice break from the industrial environment where Lighthouse production is centered, the garden provides a pleasant space for employees to relax. The garden provides an opportunity for employees who may want to learn more about plants and gardening, as well as a chance to relieve stress during the workday.
People who are blind, DeafBlind, and blind with other disabilities contend with many barriers each day. There are significant barriers to finding employment and a 70% unemployment rate within the blind community, challenges traveling to and from home, and difficulties in finding accessible information. Our fragrant garden is designed to be an accessible space, providing equal enjoyment for people who are blind and sighted.
We are always working to improve our services, including the Ethel L. Dupar Fragrant Garden to make them more accessible and enjoyable for our community.
