We are excited to share a major step forward in our mission to empower people who are blind, DeafBlind, and blind with other disabilities. Thanks to a generous two-year grant from the Harnish Foundation, The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. will be expanding our Computer Training Program—a program that’s helping to shape brighter futures for people in the Greater Seattle area.

This grant will fund the addition of a full-time Computer and Assistive Technology Instructor, allowing us to offer more personalized, one-on-one training to our employees who are blind or visually impaired. This instruction goes beyond the basics—it provides the digital skills necessary to succeed in today’s workforce, from typing and keyboarding to mastering screen readers and advanced accessibility tools like AI-powered technology.

“The Lighthouse provides training on access technology and software because these skills are critical for employees who are blind to succeed at their jobs and to position them for other opportunities,” said George Abbott, President and CEO of the Lighthouse. “These skills also empower individuals to manage their banking, grocery shopping, and other essential daily living needs.”

With the support of the Harnish Foundation, we’re not just teaching technology, we’re creating access to independence, career advancement, and economic mobility. As more aspects of daily life move online, this training is essential for employment and full participation in society.

“The new instructor is a huge step toward empowering individuals who are blind to reach their full potential,” shared Tim Paulding, Employee and Community Services and Instructional Manager at the Lighthouse. “This position will play a key role in expanding essential technology skills needed for people who are blind to gain independence and self-sufficiency at the Lighthouse and beyond.”

We’re deeply grateful to the Harnish Foundation for their partnership and vision. Thank you! Together, we’re making sure that access to life-changing technology training is available to those who need it most.
