Schedule now for the 2022-2023 school year!

For over ten years The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. has been educating 5th grade students from King County schools in understanding and appreciating the capabilities of people who are blind, DeafBlind, and blind with other disabilities. We would love for you and your students to join us for our School Tour Program during the 2022-2023 school year.

On the tour, students are guided through a series of presentations including interactive demonstrations of braille, accessible technology, our DeafBlind program, a visit to our machine shop, and a guide dog presentation. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn directly from employees who are blind and DeafBlind.

At the end of the tour, each student will be given a gift to take home with them which will include: a reading book about people who are blind, a print/braille story sheet about Helen Keller, a braille alphabet card, a vision simulation card, and their name written in braille. Teachers will also receive these items as well as a set of three slate and styluses for use in the classroom (to write braille), and a flash drive containing educational resources including video links and activity handouts promoting braille, sign language, and more. Upon request, the Lighthouse will reimburse the cost of transportation to and from your school’s location, not to exceed $120.

During the 2022-2023 school year we will be offering several tour dates, day and time to be determined.

Each tour may host up to 30 students (plus teachers and chaperones), pending current COVID guidelines.

If for any reason you are unable to take part in an on-site tour, we can bring a condensed version of our tour to you (four weeks advanced scheduling is required).

For questions about this program, or to learn of available dates and to secure your spot please send an email to schooltours@LHBlind.org.
