Every year in February, we celebrate Low Vision Awareness Month to raise awareness about the challenges faced by people with low vision and to educate the public about ways to support those affected by this condition. Low vision is a visual impairment that cannot be corrected by standard glasses, contact lenses, or surgery. Low vision significantly impacts daily activities.
Who Low Vision Effects
An estimated 25 million people in the U.S. have low vision. The majority of those individuals are over the age of 65. However, low vision can also affect younger individuals due to conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy.
The Impact of Low Vision
Living with low vision can be challenging and isolating, making daily activities such as reading, cooking, and navigating unfamiliar environments difficult. It can also impact one’s mental and emotional well-being, leading to feelings of frustration, anxiety, and depression.
However, it is important to note that those with low vision are still capable and have the potential to lead full and productive lives with the right support and resources. This is where the community can come together to make a difference.
4 Ways to Support People with Low Vision
1. Educate yourself!
When you learn about the causes of low vision and the challenges that people with low vision can experience, you can better understand their needs and experiences.
2. Advocate for accessibility!
Support initiatives that promote accessibility and inclusivity for those with low vision. This includes providing audio descriptions for visual media, making information available in braille and large print text, and provide access to assistive technology.
3. Be an ally!
Offer to assist those in your life who are adjusting to low vision by helping them navigate unfamiliar environments, reading materials, or assisting in performing tasks.
4. Support a cause!
