Orientation and Mobility (O&M) instructors assist individuals who are blind and DeafBlind in learning skills to travel safely and efficiently through their environment. O&M encompasses a wide range of travel skills including long cane technique, wayfinding/orientation, street crossings, public transit, use of GPS and electronic travel aids, guide dog readiness, and more.
The Lighthouse’s Orientation and Mobility program provides training to our employees who are blind and DeafBlind. Initial services focus first on orientation to the work space, Lighthouse facilities, and employees’ commute to and from the Lighthouse. Services may continue to general mobility skill instruction, or more specific location instruction, such as their home neighborhood, route to the grocery store, and favorite coffee shop. Our O&M services are designed to empower employees by providing skills of independence so they may fully participate in employment and their community.
Eligibility
Orientation and Mobility services are currently offered to Lighthouse employees who meet the legal definition of blindness.
Funding
Lighthouse Orientation and Mobility program is funded through a combination of grants, contributions from local corporations, foundations, service organizations and individual charitable giving, and Lighthouse operations. There is no cost to participants of this program for individuals who are employed at the Lighthouse.
