A New Discovery

“When I was in my early teens my parents started noticing that I was tripping on things. I didn’t see what was in front of me. I’d always been Deaf but this was a new development,” Paula shares.

This discovery led to a diagnosis of retinitis pigmentosa (RP), a progressive vision disorder that can lead to total vision loss over time. Paula has Usher Syndrome, a condition that affects both hearing and vision.

“This was new to my family and me and we needed to learn about what that was,” she remembers.

Despite the gradual loss of her vision, Paula maintained an active childhood, engaging in sports and outdoor activities. Her indomitable spirit kept her going.

Navigating Challenges and Finding Support

With her zest for life undiminished, Paula attended a mainstream high school with a Deaf program, where she not only learned American Sign Language (ASL) but also connected with fellow Deaf students.

Although her path initially led her to study Graphic Arts in college, Paula had to adapt her plans due to her progressing vision loss.

She embarked on a journey of motherhood, raising two children and overcoming communication challenges in her marriage. The eventual divorce led Paula to explore her identity within the DeafBlind community, prompting her move to Seattle, WA and connect with the Lighthouse.

For the past 15 years, Paula has been an integral part of the Lighthouse community in her role as a Production Worker. Paula’s work involves creating products like stuff sacks through intricate processes and materials.
