The Lighthouse’s Independent Living Services Program helps people who are blind or have low vision develop the skills and confidence needed to live safely and independently in their own homes and communities.

Our Daily Living Skills Instructors provide personalized, in-home training tailored to each individual’s goals and needs. Training may include:

  • Using household appliances safely and effectively
  • Medication management and organization
  • Reading and writing techniques
  • Telephone and smartphone use
  • Home organization and adaptive strategies for daily tasks

We also offer Orientation and Mobility (O&M) training to help individuals travel safely and independently. O&M specialists work with participants to develop skills such as:

  • Navigating within the home and neighborhood
  • Crossing streets safely
  • Using public transportation, including bus and paratransit services
  • Building confidence in independent travel

Our goal is to empower people with blindness and low vision to maintain their independence, increase their safety, and continue living in the communities they call home.

Through a partnership with the Washington State Department of Services for the Blind, our Independent Living Program serves residents in King, Snohomish, Skagit, Island, and San Juan counties. Orientation and Mobility services are also available in Pierce County.
